TL-15 vs TL-30 Jewelry Safes: What UL Ratings Really Mean
UL TL-15 and TL-30 are independent burglary ratings from Underwriters Laboratories: a TL-15 safe has resisted a sophisticated tool attack for 15 minutes in testing, a TL-30 for 30 minutes. For most jewelry collections a TL-15 is a serious, jeweler-grade baseline; for the highest-value collections a TL-30 is the stronger choice. At Luxe Safes we build made-to-order safes at both ratings – the Gem Guard TL-15 and the Gem Guard Ultra, our TL-30 flagship – so the decision comes down to your collection, not a catalog.
What does a UL TL rating actually mean?
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) burglary ratings are earned, not claimed. In a TL test, technicians attack the safe with common and sophisticated tools, and the clock only runs while tools are touching the safe. A TL-15 certification means the safe resisted that concentrated attack for a net 15 minutes; TL-30 means 30 minutes. A real burglar without a UL lab’s tools, plans and practice faces a far longer job. This is why jewelers – who protect inventory worth millions – insist on TL-rated containers, and why Luxe Safes supplies safes and vault rooms to New York’s Diamond District jewelers.
Burglary ratings vs. fire ratings: two different tests
A TL rating measures resistance to break-in tools. Fire ratings measure how long a safe’s interior stays below a damaging temperature during a fire. They are separate certifications, and one does not imply the other: many fire safes offer little burglary resistance, and a burglary-rated safe is not automatically fireproof. For jewelry – where a collection often includes documents, watches and heirlooms – the strongest approach is a TL-rated safe with fire protection built into the construction. Every Luxe safe is made to order, so fire protection is specified as part of your build.
TL-15 vs TL-30: how to choose
| UL TL-15 | UL TL-30 | |
|---|---|---|
| Tested resistance | 15 minutes of net tool attack | 30 minutes of net tool attack |
| Construction | Heavy rated steel construction | Substantially heavier steel; the top residential class |
| Typical fit | Serious jewelry and watch collections | The highest-value collections and estates |
| Luxe Safes models | Gem Guard TL-15; TL-15 rated builds across the line | Gem Guard Ultra – described as the strongest steel safe in the world |
| Insurance conversations | A recognized rating insurers understand | The rating insurers associate with jeweler-grade protection |
Two practical notes. First, weight and wall thickness follow the rating – a TL-30 is a heavier safe, which matters for placement and floors; because every Luxe safe is built to custom dimensions, we engineer the size and installation together. Second, choose the rating for the collection you will own in ten years, not just today’s – collectors rarely downsize.
Why Luxe Safes builds to both ratings
Luxe Safes builds made-to-order luxury jewelry safes at both TL-15 and TL-30 for residential use. Founder Robert Tompkin spent more than 20 years in New York’s Diamond District and has built over 2,000 custom safes, so every build pairs jeweler-grade steel with interiors designed for daily use: hardwood drawers lined in Ultrasuede – never cardboard or foam – configured for your rings, watches and necklaces. No Luxe safe uses a fingerprint or biometric lock; proven lock mechanisms are a deliberate reliability decision. White-glove installation is included nationwide.

Frequently asked questions
Is a TL-15 safe enough for a home jewelry collection?
For most collections, yes – TL-15 is a jeweler-grade rating earned through independent UL tool-attack testing, far beyond typical residential security containers. For the highest-value collections, estates, or combined jewelry-and-watch storage, step up to a TL-30 like the Luxe Safes Gem Guard Ultra.
What is the difference between TL-15, TL-30 and a residential security container (RSC)?
An RSC resists basic attacks for a short period with common tools. TL-15 and TL-30 safes resist sustained attacks with sophisticated tools for 15 and 30 net minutes respectively, and require far heavier steel construction. The TL ratings are the protection classes jewelers use.
Does a TL-30 safe protect against fire too?
Not automatically – burglary and fire ratings are separate tests. Because every Luxe safe is made to order, fire protection is specified as part of the build alongside the TL rating.
Which Luxe Safes models are TL-15 or TL-30 rated?
The Gem Guard TL-15 is our UL TL-15 model and the Gem Guard Ultra is our UL TL-30 flagship, described as the strongest steel safe in the world. Both are made to order with custom dimensions, Ultrasuede-lined hardwood drawers and white-glove installation nationwide.
